Welcome back to Term Two! I hope you all had an enjoyable break and your children are looking forward to another productive term in Prep.
The organised curriculum for this term is as follows:
Religion and Health
We will begin with reading the story of The Ten Lepers and will explore the importance of being thankful. The children will identify times when they have been thankful. We will also learn about the importance of including others in activities and learn strategies to use when feeling excluded or to include others.
We will then explore the way in which believers pray together during special celebrations and rituals that mark important times in the life of the church year. We will explore the sacred symbols used in the church and then the students will present a guided church tour, naming celebrations, symbols and object used in the church.
Science, Technology and Visual Arts
We will explore ocean and rainforest habitats and the animals that live in them. Our focus will be to develop an understanding of the needs of living things. The children will then create an information poster about one animal and its needs to survive. They will learn how to plan and use different materials and techniques to create this poster.
Geography
After learning about the Church as a special place and habitats as special places the children will explore special places to them.
English
As part of our English program we will continue working on developing phonemic awareness (letter and sound relationships). We will continue learning reading strategies and build on the comprehension skills of retell and main idea.
In writing we will focus on the skills needed to write a sentence and the children will use sentence starters to write their own sentences in an Information Report about a habitat.
We will begin our Sight Word program this term. A letter and booklet will be sent home shortly with further information. There is an expectation that your child should spend some time (10 min) each day learning these words with an adult.
Maths
In Mathematics we will continue our number awareness and various mathematical concepts, including measurement (capacity) and ordering small collections and events.
Dance Fever
The children will be participating in a Dance Fever where they will learn routines and elements of dance. An important part of this program is social etiquette and interaction with peers.
Digital Literacy
The children will be attending digital literacy lessons in the computer lab this term with Miss Davey. The focus of these lessons will be to give the children a general introduction to computers. This will include sensible digital citizen behaviour, learning the parts of a computer and knowing the names and how the parts work. They will learn how to logon and use simple tools in the Word program.
Don’t forget to check the class blog regularly for any news and announcements.
