Welcome back for a terrific Term 3. I hope you all had an enjoyable break and your children are looking forward to another productive term in Prep.
Curriculum Focus
Religion
This term in Religion we will explore the Old Testament stories of David and Goliath, Creation and Joseph. The children will become familiar with the characters, events and messages from these stories and will identify how these stories can help them in their own lives.
Science
After reading the story, Big Rain Coming by Katrina Germain, the children will investigate weather characteristics to increase their knowledge of how weather affects their daily lives. They will also learn how an indigenous approach to weather includes environment indicators, such as what animals are around and what plants are in flower or fruit.
Humanities and Social Sciences
In Geography the children will learn about the representation of places on simple maps and will locate Arnhem Land (connected to science weather unit) and their local area on a map of Australia.
In History the children will learn about the importance of storytelling in Indigenous culture. They will develop an awareness of the significance of Dreamtime stories for Indigenous Australians in passing on their culture from one generation to another. They will listen to, read, view, and respond to dreaming stories by sequencing them on a timeline.
English
We will be building the student’s oral language skills, developing phonological awareness, reading and comprehension skills and developing knowledge of letter sound relationships. We will be continuing Popcorn Words and Guided Reading sessions this term.
Maths
We will continue exploring numbers to ten and develop various concepts, including time, measurement and location and direction. We will expand on our growing awareness of informally measuring objects, by investigating how big crocodiles are, in connection with our Indigenous studies. After reading the story, Rosie’s Walk by Pat Hutchins, we will learn how to give and follow directions in a familiar location. We will continue using the Calendar Wall and we will link specific days to familiar events in our week. We will also learn how to sequence events in our day.
Thank you for your continual support and as always, if you have any queries please let us know so that we can arrange a time to meet.
